Seven things pro photographers do that you probably don’t

Beginners or pros, I’m pretty sure we all have the same love for photography. However, professionals have a unique set of skills and techniques that raise their work to a higher level. In his latest video, Henry Turner delves into the strategies pro photographers use that beginners often overlook or consciously ignore. By understanding and implementing them, you can take your photography to new heights, too.
1. Shoot raw
Shoot in RAW format instead of JPEG to capture more image data for better post-processing flexibility. RAW files provide a wider dynamic range, allowing you to adjust exposure, contrast, color, and other elements without sacrificing image quality. This is especially beneficial for landscape photography, where you often encounter high-contrast scenes with bright highlights and deep shadows.
2. Master post-processing
Learn editing software like Lightroom and Photoshop to enhance your photos. There are also free options available. Post-processing is an essential part of a professional photographer’s workflow. It allows you to correct imperfections, enhance colors, and add creative effects to your images. Even if you prefer a more natural look, basic editing skills can help you refine your photos and achieve your desired aesthetic.
3. Focus on composition
Take your time and deliberately refine your composition for impactful photos. Experiment with different angles, perspectives, and leading lines. Composition is the foundation of a strong photo that will make your viewers stick to it and memorize it. So, carefully consider the placement of your subject, background, and foreground elements in your shots.
4. Pre-visualize your photos
Before taking a picture, mentally imagine the final composition to improve your shot selection. This helps you anticipate the desired outcome and make informed decisions about camera settings, framing, and lighting. It can also prevent you from taking unnecessary shots and save you time and effort. For me personally, it helps to imagine that I’m shooting film. This makes me not just “spray and pray” but deliberately slow down and think my photos through before I press the shutter.
5. Practice patience
Becoming a skilled photographer takes time and dedication. Be patient with yourself, the learning process, and the ever-changing conditions. Patience is a virtue in photography. It allows you to wait for the perfect moment, experiment with different techniques, and learn from your mistakes. Remember that progress takes time, and it’s important to enjoy the journey rather than just focusing on the destination.
6. Prioritize light
Light dramatically affects the mood and feel of your photos. While it can be challenging, you should always think about the lighting and make the best of it. After all, it determines the exposure, contrast, color, and overall atmosphere of your images. Learning to control and manipulate light is a fundamental skill for any photographer. Pay attention to the direction, quality, and intensity of light, and experiment with different lighting conditions to create unique and visually striking photographs.
7. Be adaptable
Especially in landscape photography, be prepared to adjust your plans and focus based on changing weather conditions. Adaptability is essential in photography, especially when working with natural elements like weather and light. Be prepared to change your plans and adjust your approach as needed. I know it can be frustrating (trust me, I like planning and having a routine), but photography will teach you to embrace the unexpected and use it to your advantage.
Although Henry focuses mostly on landscape photography, I’d say these tips apply to most genres. So, make sure to watch his video and start implementing these tips as of today.
