I’ve always found astrophotography fascinating. With the right gear (even pretty basic), you can explore the vastness of the universe from the comfort of your own backyard. Trevor Jones of AstroBackyard has been passionate about astrophotography for years, and in his latest video, he shares plenty of tips for anyone who wants to give it a go.

Trevor started his journey into astrophotography in the summer of 2010 with a modest telescope and a point-and-shoot camera. So, no, you don’t have to spend thousands on a telescope and a dedicated astro camera. His first deep-sky image, a faint purple glow from the Orion Nebula, sparked his passion for this captivating hobby further.

For Trevor, one of the most appealing aspects of astrophotography is the ability to share the incredible details of celestial objects with others. Unlike visual astronomy, which is a solitary and “in-the-moment” experience, astrophotography allows you to reveal the beauty of the cosmos and share it with others and form or join the community around astrophotography.

For most of us, starting with astrophotography seems like a lot of work. Too much work. However, Trevor says that astrophotography is not as difficult as it might seem. Sure, it requires patience, dedication, and some technical knowledge, but the rewards are immense. After all, we all gotta start somewhere, right?

For starters, you should invest time in understanding your gear, and Trevor gives excellent suggestions what to buy, no matter the level you’re currently at. Then, you need to plan your sessions, and there are plenty of apps and tools that can help you. Last but not least, there’s also image processing involved, and you definitely should master the techniques to make your astrophotography truly stand out.

Be sure to watch Trevor’s full video to learn more about astrophotography and start your own journey. You can also follow his work on his website, Instagram, and YouTube.
