Kolari Magnetic Clip-in Filters for Sony APS-C

Kolari has launched its range of Magnetic Clip-In Filters for Sony APS-C E Mount cameras. As is usual for Kolari, the filters come in a range of light blocking powers. While some are the standard ND and mist diffusion filters, others are a little more strange.

The range is available in several different infrared wavelengths, as well as UV/IR-Cut flavour. For neutral density, you’ve got 3, 6 and 10 stop options, along with Mist Diffusion 1/4, Iridium colour enhancing, and IR Chrome Lite.

Kolari makes it clear that while their filters do block and allow certain wavelengths of light, you can’t just stick these in any camera. You need to have a camera that’s been converted to full spectrum, or at least a range that covers what you want to shoot.

This way, the camera is capable of seeing everything and the filter determines what gets through. This allows it to shoot infrared at various wavelengths, as well as full colour without any infrared or ultraviolet interference.

The five infrared wavelengths available are 550nm, 590nm, 665nm, 720nm and 850nm. All of these are pretty common wavelengths for digital infrared photography. Each presents a very different look. Converting your camera to full spectrum and using filters like these means you’re not limited to just one look.

Available for a wide range of mounts

The filters themselves aren’t new. They’ve been available for full-frame Sony E mount, Fujifilm X, Canon RF, RED Komodo/V-Raptor, and full-frame Nikon Z mount for a while. But now APS-C Sony shooters get to experience the benefits of a sensor filter system that sits behind your lens.

Kolari says that the new Sony APS-C Mount Magnetic Clip-In Filters are compatible with the Sony A6000, Sony A6100, Sony A6300, Sony A6400 ($748), Sony A6500, and Sony A6600 ($998).

Price and Availability

Prices range from $99.99 to $139.99, depending on which filter you need. It’s an extra $1 if you need the magnetic mounting plate, but you only need one of these per camera.
