Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 DC DN Contemporary for Canon RF Mount

Sigma teased us a little while ago with the announcement that RF lenses are coming to the Sigma lens lineup. At the time, the company said that a number of lenses would be appearing over the coming months, and the first has now been officially announced.

The company has released the final specs for the Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 DC DN Contemporary lens for Canon RF mount ($599). Not much has changed from the other mount versions of the same lens, although it does have a slightly increased price.

Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 DC DN Contemporary – Sigma’s first RF Mount lens

Sigma has been working on making RF mount lenses a reality since at least 2021. But it wasn’t until last year that Canon finally announced they were considering allowing 3rd parties to make autofocus RF mount lenses. The decision for which lenses get approval is made on a case-by-case basis, and Sigma seems to have had the decision fall in its favour.

The Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 DC DN Contemporary is the first of six Sigma APS-C lenses to come to the Canon RF mount. There’s a 10-18mm f/2.8 zoom still on the way, along with 16mm, 23mm, 30mm and 56mm f/1.4 primes. All of these are DC DN Contemporary APS-C lenses.

There’s no word on when the others will be released, but the first is now available to pre-order. It communicates electronically with RF mount bodies, providing feedback between the two in real-time. So, you should get fast, accurate autofocus, and all the pertinent information will be stored in your EXIF data.

It has a wide f/2.8 aperture throughout the zoom range and offers a field of view similar to a 28-80mm focal length range on full-frame bodies.
