Leica D-Lux 8

Leica has officially announced the new Leica D-Lux 8 ($1,595) digital camera. Featuring a 17-megapixel Four Thirds CMOS sensor, its 10.9-34mm f/1.7-2.8 lens offers a focal length range equivalent to 24-70mm on full-frame.

Despite being a Leica, the D-Lux 8 sports a fairly reasonable price tag. It’s still pretty high when you consider that it’s a compact, but it’s certainly not as out of reach as other Leica cameras. It even comes with an on-camera flash.

Leica D-Lux 8 – 8th generation Leica compact camera

The Leica D-Lux 8 is, as the name suggests, the 8th generation of the company’s compact lineup. It features simplified controls that let you focus on shooting without letting the technical get in the way. And while it contains a smaller Four Thirds sensor, with a focal length equivalent to 24-70mm on full-frame, you get a great, deep depth of field for things like street photography.

The D-Lux 8 introduces DNG raw files to the range. It’s the first D-Lux camera to offer DNG raw files, which will be a very welcome upgrade for prior model users. You’re also able to pull images off with your smartphone using the Leica FOTOS app.

Leica D-Lux 8 Back View

On the back of the camera are very few buttons or dials. Just the basics, next to that large LCD, which appears to be about 3-inch, although the full specifications don’t appear to have been released yet. The Leica D-Lux 7 (buy here) featured a 3-inch 1.24m-dot display, so I would hope the D-Lux 8 would meet at least those specifications, if not beat them by a fair margin.

Price and Availability

The Leica D-Lux 8 is available to pre-order now for $1,595. Items are expected to begin shipping on July 2nd, 2024.
