Sony leads Japan’s BCN market share, knocking Canon off its top spot

Japanese camera retail giant BCN has just released its latest sales report for June 2024. The results show that Sony has led sales for the month, with the Sony ZV-E10 ($698) taking the top spot for individual camera sales.
It’s perhaps not much of a surprise. Canon’s sales have been heading in a downward direction and Sony has led sales at BCN in the past. Nikon sits in third, but perhaps the biggest surprise is Fujifilm. This is the first time they’ve been in BCN’s top four in 24 years.
Sony leads, Canon’s slipping, Nikon’s third, and Fuji breaks into the list
The latest report shows an overall look at mirrorless camera sales with sensors of all sizes. And it’s interesting to see how things have evolved over the years. Canon actually led BCN’s mirrorless sales towards the end of 2019, with Sony second and Olympus third.
When we look at just full-frame mirrorless from 2020, though, the lineup looks very similar to how it looks now for the overall report. Sony was in first, with Canon second and Nikon third. This wasn’t much of a surprise. Sony spent a lot of time at number one, with almost 100% market share in the full-frame mirrorless market. Nikon and Canon both had a lot of catching up to do.
Now, it’s six years on from those initial Nikon and Canon mirrorless announcements, and the overall share now has Sony at the top, followed by Canon and then Nikon. What’s surprising about the latest report, however, is Fujifilm. BCN says this is the first time they’ve made it into the top four in 24 years.
- Sony 33.3%
- Canon 25.7%
- Nikon 17.4%
- Fujifilm 10.7%
- Others 12.9%
Top 10 individual cameras
It’s perhaps not so surprising that Fuji has made the list once one realises that it’s largely down to Fujifilm X-T50 ($1,799) sales. The X-T50 is essentially an interchangeable lens version of the extremely popular Fujifilm X100VI ($1,599) – which seems to be permanently out of stock.
Interestingly, the number one camera on BCN’s list is the Sony ZV-E10. It almost feels like Sony updated it too early with the recent Sony ZV-E10 II ($998) announcement. I wonder how sales of the new model will compare with the old, and how many will feel it’s worth the upgrade.
The complete list looks like this:
- Sony ZV-E10
- Canon EOS R50
- Canon EOS R100
- Sony A6400
- Nikon Z30
- Fujifilm X-T50
- Sony A7C II
- Nikon Zfc
- Panasonic Lumix G100D
- Nikon Z50
It’s also interesting that out of the top 10 cameras on the list, only one of them is a full-frame camera. That honour goes to the Sony A7C II ($2,498). Panasonic is also on the list, representing Micro Four Thirds with the Panasonic Lumix G100D ($597.99).
It will be interesting to see how things look in the coming months with the release of the Sony ZV-E10 II, the Canon EOS R5 Mark II ($4,299), and Nikon’s plan to implement RED technology into future Z mount models. Panasonic has also yet to replace almost its entire full-frame L mount lineup. So, we may see some of those in the near future, too.
