Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 DG DN II

Sigma has announced the new Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 DG DN II lens (buy here). It’s the successor to the extremely popular Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 DG DN (buy here) for Sony E and Leica L mounts. It comes with new optics and a lower weight.

Its 24-70mm focal length range has a constant f/2.8 maximum aperture throughout, and Sigma says it’s fast to focus than its predecessor, too. It’s also able to focus much more closely, with reduced focus breathing for video shooters.

The new Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 DG DN II offers some nice benefits over the original mirrorless lens. It has a new optical design, with six “F” Low Dispersion (FLD) elements, two Special Low Dispersion (SLD) and five aspherical elements.

This makeup offers improved optical clarity, reduced chromatic aberration, and reduced colour fringing. It also offers better control over coma for astrophotographers. The new design also makes the lens lighter and more compact than its predecessor.

Thanks to the reduced weight and the introduction of a linear focus motor actuator (HLA), it also brings improved performance, with faster focusing. The minimum focus distance of the lens has also been reduced to a mere 17cm.

As one would expect with a lens of this calibre (and price), it’s also built tough for daily professional use. Internally, metal components increase the strength of the internal structure, while rubber seals protect it from even the worst weather conditions.

It’s a great complement to the Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 DG DN Sports lens (buy here), released last year. With the Sigma 14-24mm f/2.8 DG DN Art (buy here), your “Holy Grail Trinity” of zoom lenses is compete.
