Auschwitz

American reality TV star Anna Redman recently came under fire over a social media post. The former Bachelor contestant posted her outfit choice for an upcoming visit to Auschwitz, which reportedly led to death threats from her Instagram followers.

Redman, who boasts 114,000 followers on the platform, initially shared a list of outfits she planned to wear during her trip to Poland, including a specific outfit for her visit to the Auschwitz concentration camp. The post included the caption, “Test packing hack… Is somebody going to match my freak?” which is absurd to begin with… Not surprisingly, it was quickly met with fierce criticism from users who deemed the content inappropriate and insensitive.

In an interview with TMZ, Redman revealed the severity of the backlash she faced. What I find equally absurd as trivializing this colossal tragedy is the alleged death threats the woman received on social media. One particularly alarming message allegedly read, “I hope they kill you when you’re there.” That’s not as bad as her being ignorant of the severity of the tragedy that happened in Auschwitz – it’s worse.

Critics have accused Redman of being “tone deaf” for posting about her attire in relation to a site of profound historical tragedy, where an estimated 1.1 million people were murdered during the Holocaust. One commenter expressed outrage, noting that the post “implies she’s going to be taking ‘aesthetic’ photos at a death camp where over 1 million people were murdered.”

In response to the outcry, Redman swiftly issued an apology and removed the post from her Instagram account. She acknowledged the hurt caused by her post and expressed regret for the insensitivity displayed.

This incident echoes broader concerns about respectful behavior at Auschwitz. You may remember that the site has seen similar controversies in the past. Auschwitz Museum issued several warnings over the years asking visitors to pay respect to the site and the solemnity it carries.
