Ulanzi is a small company you might’ve not heard of. Up until not long ago, they were primarily focusing on tripods for DSLR and smartphones, but in the last year, they expanded into multiple extra fields. They announced a cooling fan for your camera, a flash, and even a tiny smoke machine. Now, they are expanding into new territory again, this time into the world of camera lenses with their new Ulanzi 27mm f/2.8($139).
The Ulanzi CL02 AF 27mm f/2.8 lens
The new lens from Ulanzi is a 27mm f/2.8 for APS-C. In other words, it has an equivalent focal length of 40.5mm on a full-frame sensor. As you would expect from an APS-C lens, it is light and affordable. The lens only weighs 182 grams, which isn’t far from its $139 price.
The Ulanzi 27mm f/2.8 lens features six elements across five groups. It has a 52mm filter thread, which fits the lens’s small size. The lens also has an internal autofocus system, which means the length of the lens doesn’t change as you change the focus distance. Additionally, the lens has a USB-C port for firmware updates. The lens has a minimum focus distance of 0.3m.
The Ulanzi 27mm is for the E-mount only
Currently, Ulanzi has only announced a version for the Sony E-mount, with no word about Fuji X or Nikon Z versions later down the line. If you’re interested in the lens but don’t have a Sony camera, you can still use the lens with adapters. Still, there is no shortage of other affordable APS-C lenses in the market, so I would only recommend it if you have a Sony camera and a camera from another system.
Price and availability
The Ulanzi CL02 AF, 27mm F2.8, is available from the Ulanzi website for $139. It comes with a front cap, a rear cap, and a warranty card.
