Hold onto your hats, Pixel fans, because Google has unveiled the design of the Pixel 9 Pro, and let’s just say it packs a punch… right in the retinas. Just when we thought camera bumps were a thing of the past, Google introduced the Pixel 9 with the biggest camera bump you’ve ever seen.

Remember those leaked renders from January that made Pixel fans mad? The ones that looked like someone had superglued a chunky camera module onto a phone designed in 2013? Well, those apparently weren’t just rumors.

But hey, not everything is as bad as it looks. At least that monstrous camera hump houses some amazing tech (at least presumably). Rumors point to a triple-camera array in the Pixel 9 Pro, boasting 50 megapixels. The main wide-angle camera is expected to use a large Samsung 1/1.31-inch GNK sensor, while the ultra-wide and telephoto cameras could utilize Sony’s 1/2.51-inch IMX858 sensor – an upgrade from the 1/2.8-inch sensor in the Pixel 8 Pro. The telephoto lens might also employ a periscope design based on the rectangular lens cutout, potentially enabling 5x optical zoom for sharper close-up photos. Additionally, the Pixel 9 series could be the first generation to offer 8K video recording.

The Pixel phones have always been known for their incredible cameras, and it will probably stay the case. But this time, Google might have sacrificed a little too much aesthetics on the altar of megapixels. Still, there’s one good news. To quote my partner: at least the price will now drop on the Pixel 8. :)

For now, all we have is the preview in Google’s short teaser video, and we’ll have to wait until August 13 to see the official unveiling and hear more details.
