I’m tiring of the wait – and looking at alternatives to my photographic needs. Will Fuji ever catch up, or is it all hype?

Thank you.

Comment on This is how the new Google Pixel 9 could ruin photography forever! by Charles G Haacker https://www.diyphotography.net/new-google-pixel-9-could-ruin-photography-forever/#comment-191667 Tue, 27 Aug 2024 15:52:42 +0000 https://www.diyphotography.net/?p=280027#comment-191667 Agree with Libby and John J. The great puzzle is what, if anything, can be done about it. I make full use of Adobe (Lightroom Classic and Photoshop 2024), plus Topaz Photo AI, and value them highly, but I hope I am an ethical photographer so I disclose — mostly.

I’m neither a photojournalist nor a forensic photographer, so if I clone out, say, a bright yellow fire hydrant in the scene, I won’t make a point of disclosing it. But there is a tipping point, and I think (hope) I know where it is. I will label something a “composite” or a “photoillustration” if I have done something relatively radical, like using Photoshop’s AI Generative Fill to remove or replace something. I love that I can do it! But I know way too many photographers that erupt in fury if they feel they have been fooled, and I get it; I let them know up front that manipulations have been made. So far, no one has ever offered to punch me in the nose. They may hate what I do, but at least they know going in that they are not looking at trVth.

The problem is, you can’t enforce ethics. Even the big agencies with uber-strict rules get uber tough when an otherwise Pulitzer-winning photographer gets caught altering a newspicture. How many top-tier photojournalists have been fired and banned for, say, (famously) cloning out another photographer’s distracting camera in the foreground?

John and Jane Q. Public are just having fun, captivated by the awesome things they can do, without a care in the world about potential consequences.

In a world that already believes that feelings trump truth, and you don’t have to have proof to prove anything, look out. Pandora’s box is open, there’s no going back…..

One of my cousins, who filters her own selfies to the point of being almost non-recognizable, will love this. Real photographers are not the market here.

Comment on An LED light shaped like a film canister? Why not? by John Madden https://www.diyphotography.net/an-led-light-shaped-like-a-film-canister-why-not/#comment-191664 Mon, 26 Aug 2024 08:19:43 +0000 https://www.diyphotography.net/?p=278764#comment-191664 Reminds me of the iphone cases that look like a tape cassette, or the coffee mugs that look like a lens, so why not. Doesn’t have to be mega functional to be be desirable. It will be useful in some situations that only need a bit of extra light. Its tiny, attaches via a magnetic holder that fits in the hot/cold shoe allowing it to be angled and the colour temp is even supposed to be adjustable. Even if just useful to search a dark camera bag, at less than a tenner, I’m ordering one.

Comment on Comparing the Fujifilm x100v to real film by Al Guerin https://www.diyphotography.net/comparing-the-fujifilm-x100v-to-real-film/#comment-191662 Sun, 25 Aug 2024 17:40:18 +0000 https://www.diyphotography.net/?p=279404#comment-191662 The Kodak Portra 400 scans appear so much more color accurate to what I would expect to see. The simulation on the Fuji has such a green tint to it. A third sample per image from the Fuji x100V with no film simulation would of been nice to see. Personally, all in-camera film simulations from digital cameras are better done post process if you want a certain “look.”

I’m a long time film shooter and a 10 year shooter with various models of X100. I believe film and digital are both wonderful BUT I wasn’t expecting for the difference to be so stark. The resolution of the digital images almost detract from the image. I find myself drawn to nearly all of the film shots. Nice project!

Comment on Shoot both black & white AND color, at the same time, in the same camera…oh, and on the same film! [This works for digital, too!] by Cemal Ekin https://www.diyphotography.net/shoot-both-black-white-and-color-at-the-same-time-in-the-same-camera-oh-and-on-the-same-film-this-works-for-digital-too/#comment-191655 Sat, 24 Aug 2024 12:02:42 +0000 https://www.diyphotography.net/?p=279543#comment-191655 The very early photographer, Sergey Mikhaylovich Prokudin-Gorsky was a pioneer in this technique. His images are remarkably striking in their color and subjects. Well worth a search and view his works. Thank you for bringing this old idea forward.

The Portra 400 simulation used here falls a little short. Looking at the two, the right-hand one has much more dynamic range – while the film one has harder shadows and highlights. If you really wanted to faithfully emulate the film (which some may not want to as softer/milky shadows and highlights is also a lovely tone), it could be fixed with more contrast or harder highlight and shadow settings, as well as a minor colour shift change as the digital ones are looking more turquoise generally in the examples.
