The prestigious Hasselblad Masters photography competition has unveiled its 2023 winners. This year, a record-breaking 85,000 entries were submitted by photographers worldwide, marking a significant 35% increase compared to 2021.
Instead of a single winner, the contest recognizes winners across six categories: Landscape, Architecture, Portrait, Art, Street, and Project//21. Each category winner receives the title of “Hasselblad Master,” a Hasselblad 100-megapixel mirrorless medium format camera, two XCD Series lenses, and a substantial creative fund of €5,000. They will also have the opportunity to collaborate with Hasselblad on a special project and gain global exposure through publication in the Hasselblad Masters book and on all of Hasselblad’s digital channels.
The jury chooses winners based on their photographic skills, creativity, and technical expertise. The final selections are determined by a combination of public vote and a professional grand jury composed of internationally recognized photographers and imaging experts.
Stefan Jensen, Photographer and Curator at the Hasselblad Foundation and Grand Jury Chair, commented on the outstanding quality of submissions this year. ” A word that comes to mind when looking at the winning contributions is sensemaking,” Jensen commented. “All but one category featured photographs in their original definition – a subject in front of the camera.”
“[The images] range from documentary to staged images and collages, but what they have in common is that they are a reflection of reality. This competition’s photographers open doors for viewers to understand and make sense of their surroundings, demonstrating the strength of the photographic image in contemporary times.”
